Owner approval:
- Get owner approval to clip fur, possibly sedate
and obtain FNA (discuss risk of bleeding and
non-diagnostic sample).

Mild Sedation:
- Patients do not have to be fully sedated. As an
AAFP and Fear Free practitioner, I recommend
a mild premed of butorphanol to make the scan
more comfortable for the patient and the assistants.
It also improves the speed and quality of the scan.

Recommended protocol for cats:
- Feliway spray : spray towels and cover cage when the
patient arrives at your clinic.
- Butorphanol 10mg/ml: 0.1cc IM per cat, 10 min
before scan.
- Keep patient in a quiet area.
- Gabapentin 100mg: one opened capsule mixed with
small amount of wet food, 90 minutes before the
visit. For "stressed" cats only.

Recommended protocol for dogs:
- Butorphanol 10mg/ml: 0.1cc IM per 10#
(ie 0.5cc IM for a 50# dog), 10 min before scan.
- Trazodone: 5mg/kg PO 90 minutes before scan. For
"stressed" dogs only.
- Patients do not have to be fully sedated.

Protocol for FNA:
- A full sedation may be required, depending on the
patient. The samples will be sent by SonoPaws
to Eastern Vet Path, with results the next day.
A CBC is needed prior to a FNA, and clotting factors
recommended for liver FNA. Please discuss risk of
bleeding and possible non-diagnostic sample
with owner prior.
